Should I skim or plaster my old house in Redbridge with poor walls?
We often get clients ask us our opinion about what they should do when it comes to their walls after they have removed wallpaper and they want to paint their walls. A recent client has just purchased a Victorian house and was asking us what they should do. We believe that the best way is to strip all paper and reskim everything, which will future proof the house for years to come and save time/money in the long run. However, sometimes the budget won’t allow for full re-plastering, so here are some alternative options.
First and foremost, each wall in the house will need to be inspected, as some walls may be in better condition than others. If plaster is live, then it should be removed and replaced with materials as sympathetic to the original as possible. If you have a smaller budget and can’t afford a blanket re-skim in every room, plastering only the walls that really need it is one way of reducing your costs.
For the walls that are in better condition, you may want to consider lining paper and then painting over that. However, literally ‘papering over the cracks’ is only ever going to be a temporary fix and will never be a perfect finish.
For walls with minor cracks and holes, you could consider filling in the holes yourself and then sanding the walls to create a smooth finish. This will take you more time to achieve the desired look on your walls, but can potentially save you a lot of money.
Our advice is try not to paper over cracks or cut corners when a major job is required, otherwise the job will not be done right. It is better to spend the money wisely and properly, than spending less and doing it badly, which will require further money spent to put it right.
Remember that there is also the choice to renovate the house in stages. Do the most essential rooms now, and then renovate the other ones at a later stage when you have saved up more money.
We can re-plaster your house over an extended period of time. We are happy to plaster one room at a time.
